Getting around Cumming

Cumming's road story is one freeway: GA 400 runs along the city's east side and carries the commute south to Atlanta, with express lanes and their tolls setting the travel math. GA 20 crosses it at Exit 14 and runs through town as Buford Highway and Canton Highway.

Transit is the commuter story: Xpress coaches run weekday mornings and afternoons from the Cumming Park and Ride to the Perimeter and MARTA stations, and the county runs its own reservation-based bus service. Every route below is verified; where something does not exist, this page says so.

The roads

GA 400 is the spine, GA 20 is the cross street

GA 400

The freeway runs north and south along the city's east side, with US 19 riding the same corridor. Exit 13 meets Peachtree Parkway and the Collection at Forsyth, and Exit 14 meets GA 20 across from Northside Hospital Forsyth. Southbound to Buckhead and midtown in the morning is the classic backup, and the express lanes buy time when the toll is worth it.

GA 20 and the local grid

GA 20 runs east and west through town as Buford Highway toward the Gwinnett side and Canton Highway toward the west, crossing GA 400 at Exit 14. The local moves run on Pilgrim Mill Road, Tribble Gap Road, Keith Bridge Road, Market Place Boulevard, and the streets around the square.

Transit

Coaches to the Perimeter, county buses at home

Xpress GA route 401 runs weekday mornings and afternoons from the Cumming Park and Ride, off GA 400 at GA 20, connecting to Perimeter Center and the Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, and Medical Center MARTA stations. Forsyth County's Access Forsyth service is a reservation-based, demand-response bus for county trips, and MARTA rail does not reach Forsyth: the nearest Red Line station is North Springs in Sandy Springs, a drive south on the freeway.

Bikes and honest times

The greenway rides, and the toll decision

The Big Creek Greenway, a paved multi-use trail, runs through the county in sections and gives the in-town rides an off-road lane. On the commute, the GA 400 express lanes make a Cumming trip a daily pricing decision more than a distance decision: test the free lanes and the express lanes at your actual hours, both directions, before you set a routine or a budget.
