The venue

Callanwolde Fine Arts Center

Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is a nonprofit community arts center in Atlanta's Druid Hills neighborhood, housed in a Tudor and Gothic Revival mansion at 980 Briarcliff Road NE. The estate was built around 1920 for Charles Howard Candler, president of the Coca-Cola Company and the eldest son of founder Asa Griggs Candler, and it remained the Candler family home until 1959. The mansion was designed by architect Henry Hornbostel and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Today the center runs classes, workshops, and community arts programs, and its rooms, courtyard, and grounds become the stage for JOIE each holiday season. The setting is the point: a genuine historic mansion dressed for winter, rather than a fabricated backdrop.

About the venue

Visiting Callanwolde

Beyond the holiday season, the center offers nearly 200 classes and workshops each quarter across visual arts, pottery, dance, creative writing, photography, jewelry and metalsmithing, and more. It also hosts historic tours, gallery exhibits, jazz concerts, poetry readings, and storytelling, and it serves as an event and wedding venue.

Getting there

Plan for a December evening in Druid Hills

Callanwolde sits on Briarcliff Road in the Druid Hills neighborhood, a short drive from the center of Atlanta and easy to reach from the interstates. A December evening at the center is an outdoor walk as much as an indoor show: the Light Forest is in the grounds, so layers and comfortable shoes make the evening better.

Parking and arrival details change season to season, so the honest move is to confirm them on the official JOIE page before you go. Arriving early gives you time to take in the decorated grounds before the crowds gather.
