White County, Georgia: The Mountain County Guide

White County sits in northeast Georgia's mountains, where the Chattahoochee River runs through the county and the Blue Ridge rises around it. Created in 1857 from part of Habersham County, it holds two incorporated cities, Cleveland and Helen, plus the historic valley community of Sautee Nacoochee.

The county is the mountain gateway the rest of the state drives to: the Alpine village of Helen, the trails and falls of Unicoi State Park and Anna Ruby Falls, and the river recreation that fills summer days. This overview connects the county's communities, its parks, and the live guides on CityGuideGA.

The communities of White County

Two cities and a historic valley

White County is small by population, about 28,000 people at the 2020 census, and its communities sit close together along the mountain roads. Cleveland is the county seat and the everyday center; Helen is the tourist village; Sautee Nacoochee is the historic valley between them.

Local character

Mountain living with a tourism economy

The everyday county

Cleveland holds the courthouse, the county offices, and the schools that serve the whole county. White County Schools run the classrooms from Helen to Sautee Nacoochee, and the county's permanent population is small, roughly 28,000 people at the 2020 census, spread along the mountain valleys.

The visitor economy

Tourism anchors the county's jobs: Helen's shops, restaurants, and tubing runs, the state parks and forest lands around it, and the festival calendar that peaks with Oktoberfest each fall. The rhythm is seasonal, busy from spring through the leaf color, quieter in the winter weeks between holidays.

The official visitor source for the county is the Alpine Helen/White County Convention & Visitors Bureau at helenga.org , with the visitor center at 726 Bruckenstrasse in Helen.
