Oakwood is a small city in Hall County that grew up around the crossroads where US-129 and the railroad meet, then found itself at the I-985 exit when the freeway arrived. Today the city's commercial life runs along the interstate frontage while the neighborhoods behind it keep the small-town pace, minutes from Gainesville and the lake.

Living in Oakwood
Oakwood sits in Hall County on the I-985 corridor, about 50 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, bordered by the City of Gainesville on the south and the Lake Lanier shore on the west. The interstate interchange at Exit 16 carries the hotels, the retail, and the commuter lot; the residential streets behind it hold the city's small-town life. Hall County School District serves the city.
The story of Oakwood
History of Oakwood
Oakwood began as O'Dell's Crossing, a stop on the railroad line connecting Atlanta and Charlotte, first settled in the 1870s.
The town's name came from the engines: wood-burning locomotives regularly stopped here to take on oak fuel, and the place was renamed Oakwood in 1896 for that habit. The General Assembly incorporated the town in 1903.
The railroad still divides the town, and Oakwood today is a small city in the Gainesville corridor, holding its identity between the old crossing and the I-985 interchange growth around it.
