The Cumming City Guide
Cumming is the Forsyth County seat, the county's only incorporated city, about 40 miles north of downtown Atlanta on GA 400, with the western arm of Lake Lanier at its edge.
The Cumming City Guide covers what to know, Lake Lanier access, parks, restaurants, the fairgrounds, and the day-to-day life of one of Georgia's fastest-growing county seats.
The story of Cumming
History of Cumming
Cumming was founded in 1834, a year after Forsyth County was created from former Cherokee land. Officials bought two lots from the Cherokee land lottery, divided them, and reserved one for the courthouse. The town was named for Colonel William Cumming, while the county took its name from Governor John Forsyth.
For most of its history Cumming was a quiet courthouse town at the edge of the metro, reached by two-lane roads through the county's farm country.
The GA 400 corridor changed that. Cumming today is the seat of one of the fastest-growing counties in the country, with the old square still anchoring a city that has grown far beyond its courthouse origins.
What to know
The Forsyth County seat on the GA 400 corridor
Cumming is the county seat of Forsyth County and the county's only incorporated city. The town was founded in 1833 on two land-lottery parcels and incorporated in 1834 with the county seat designation, and it is traditionally said to be named for Col. William Cumming, a Georgia native and War of 1812 officer, though local historians note the record is not certain about which of the family the name honors. GA 400 runs along the city's east side, and the western arm of Lake Lanier wraps the other.
The character is county-seat small town meeting commuter corridor: a brick courthouse square with locally owned shops and restaurants at the center, one of the state's largest fairgrounds a mile away, and new subdivisions, schools, and shopping following GA 400 north. Forsyth County has grown steadily for years and ranks among the fastest-growing counties in Georgia, and Cumming carries the county government and the civic calendar.
