Walking, parking, and the coast
Parking & Getting Around Savannah
Savannah's Historic District is famously walkable, and the rest of the city and the coast assume a car.
This page is the honest getting-around guide: walking, parking, garages, trolleys, public transit, bikes, and the drive to Tybee.
The walk
The Historic District on foot
Walking the district
The Historic District is the walkable core: the squares, River Street, and Forsyth Park are all connected on foot, and most of the visitor's Savannah is a pleasant walk.
Walking distances
Johnson Square to Forsyth Park is about a mile and a half down Bull Street, and River Street to the park is a similar walk.
The car
Parking and the coast
Parking garages
The Historic District's parking garages are the dependable option, a short walk from the squares and River Street.
Street parking
Metered street parking rings the district, easier on the edges and the neighborhoods.
The drive to Tybee
Tybee Island is about 18 miles down US 80, a 30-minute drive from downtown, with the beach day on the far end.
The airport
Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport sits west of the city, about 20 minutes from downtown.
The alternatives
Trolleys, transit, and bikes
Trolleys
The hop-on, hop-off trolleys loop the Historic District, an easy first orientation.
Public transit
Chatham Area Transit (CAT) runs the city's buses, including the downtown routes.
Bikes
The flat Historic District is good on two wheels, with bike rentals and bike-friendly streets.
