Buford and Lake Lanier
Lake Sidney Lanier, the reservoir behind Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River, runs along Buford's north end and gives the city its outdoor identity: boating, fishing, swimming, and shoreline parks run by the US Army Corps of Engineers, with the Lanier Islands resort up the shore.
This is the general orientation: the real parks, the real recreation, and the honest notes about access and conditions. It is not a reservation system, a schedule, or a review.
The lake and the dam
A reservoir behind the dam on the Chattahoochee
The US Army Corps of Engineers built Lake Sidney Lanier by damming the Chattahoochee River at Buford Dam, completed in 1956. The lake spreads across more than 690 miles of shoreline, with the public recreation run by the Corps and the private Lanier Islands resort on the north shore. The lake is the reason Buford has marinas, ramps, and a summertime identity at all.
The Corps and the resort each publish their own calendars, hours, and fees, and both are the sources for anything current. Federal day-use parks and ramps have closed without notice during federal government shutdowns, so check status before a lake day.

The Corps day-use park closest to the dam: a swim beach, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and courts, with many sites reservable in advance through Recreation.gov.
Lanier Park

A day-use park with a swim beach, picnic area, a boat ramp, and a short lakeside walking trail, one of the easiest park stops from downtown Buford.
Lower Overlook Park
Below the dam
A quiet picnic overlook below the dam with views of it in winter, and the access point for the Laurel Ridge Trail that runs the shoreline above.
West Bank Park

A smaller Corps day-use park within sight of Buford Dam, for a quick picnic or a launch without the longest lines.
On the water
Boating, fishing, and the summer day
- Boating: marinas and ramps run along the Buford side of the lake, and the busiest ramps fill early on summer weekends; arrive mid-morning or later to miss the queue.
- Fishing: the lake is known for bass, striper, and panfish, and a Georgia fishing license is required; the river below the dam is a separate cold-water fishery.
- Swimming: swim at the designated beaches at the Corps parks, never off the open shoreline.
- Conditions: water levels, debris, and park status all change with the season; the Corps' Lake Lanier page and Recreation.gov are the current sources.

Lanier Islands Resort

The large resort on the lake's north end: the Fins Up water park in season, Sunset Cove Beach, the Legacy Lodge hotel, golf, marinas and boat rentals, an RV park, and the Magical Nights of Lights drive-through in winter. The resort is privately run, and its own calendar holds the hours and passes.
The state park
Don Carter State Park, on the north end
Georgia's Don Carter State Park sits on the lake's north end in Hall County, the state-run counterpoint to the Corps parks: a swimming beach, a boat launch, camping, and trails, a drive up the shoreline from Buford and worth it for a full day on the water.

When you go
Park fees, hours, and season dates all change. Federal day-use parks, Corps ramps, and the resort each publish their own calendars, and holiday weekends are the busiest. Check the source before a special trip, and plan for the weather, which turns the lake quickly.
