The showpieces

The three anchors of an Augusta outdoors day

Phinizy Swamp Nature Park

1858 Lock and Dam Road

Free boardwalks and trails through a 1,100-acre urban wetland with herons, otters, and alligators, open daily from dawn to dusk. The visitor center and Swamp Shop run shorter hours, so check before you plan around them.

Augusta Canal towpath trails

Along the canal, from downtown north

The free walking and biking trails along the 1845 canal, with the mill buildings and the Lockkeeper's Cottage as the landmarks. The Discovery Center at Enterprise Mill is the indoor half of the day.

Augusta Riverwalk

Downtown, along the Savannah River

The brick promenade along the river below the bluffs, with fountains, gardens, the Jessye Norman Amphitheater, and the museums at its edges. Free and open daily.

The honest note

Check before you go

Phinizy Swamp and the canal trails are free; the Discovery Center charges admission and runs on its own hours. Trail conditions change with the river and the weather, so the honest move is a quick check of the official page before you drive.
