Campus and the college town
University of Georgia & Athens
The University of Georgia is the reason Athens exists as it does: the oldest state-chartered university in America, and the anchor of the town's identity since 1801.
This page is a visitor's and parent's orientation to campus and the town around it. It is an independent guide, not affiliated with UGA.
Start here
The Arch, North Campus, and the classic walk
Start at the Arch on Broad Street, the cast-iron gate at the foot of North Campus. The classic walk runs from the Arch through the quad to the Chapel and the historic buildings around it. The university's visitor center and campus map are the official starting points for tours, and the Historic Athens Welcome Center downtown is the place for the town's own history.
The big weekends
Football, Parents Weekend, move-in, and graduation
Sanford Stadium and football Saturdays
Between the Hedges on game days: the stadium seats more than 92,000, and downtown turns into one long tailgate. Book parking and tables early, and check the official athletics calendar for dates.
Parents Weekend, move-in, and graduation
The big family weekends are move-in in August, Parents Weekend in the fall, and graduation in May. Hotels fill months ahead, so the honest advice is to book early and plan the downtown meals in advance.
Downtown Athens from campus
The Arch sits at the edge of downtown, so the walk from North Campus to College Avenue is the town's main street: coffee, lunch, and the music venues are all on foot.
Things to do near UGA
The State Botanical Garden, the Georgia Museum of Art, and the North Oconee greenway are all within a short drive or walk of campus.
