The Cobb County seat with the mountain, the square, and a city of its own.

Marietta is the county seat of Cobb County, set on the rail line northwest of Atlanta. The town square, Kennesaw Mountain rising to the north, and a full-service suburban economy define it.

Living in Marietta

Marietta is a complete city: the courthouse, the square, a walkable historic core, quality schools, and the big-employer base of the Cobb corridor (including the air logistics center at the former Dobbins base). MARTA stops at the edge of town, and downtown Atlanta is about 25 minutes away. It is the metro's best example of a county seat that grew into a city.

The story of Marietta

History of Marietta

Marietta was settled in 1833 and chosen as the seat of Cobb County in 1834, incorporated the same year. It was named for Mary Cobb, the wife of the senator who gave the county its name.

As a resort town and rail stop it drew summer visitors before the Civil War, and Sherman's army marched through it in 1864. Marietta today is a full county seat and metro city, with the Square, the Gone With the Wind ties, and the national cemetery among its landmarks.

Practical notes about Marietta

The questions a move here starts with

Schools

Attendance follows the address: the school district for a given lot depends on the boundary, and in most small Georgia cities the county system carries the load. The single reliable move is to verify the exact attendance line for the address before you buy or rent.

Getting around

A car is the honest answer in Cobb County: the daily loop runs on local roads and the county highways that connect the region, with the nearest interstate or four-lane within reach.

Jobs & healthcare

Work in and around Marietta tracks the county economy: schools, county government, healthcare, and the area's agriculture and manufacturing, with the nearest regional centers a short drive away. Hospital care means the county hospital or a drive to the nearest regional system, so confirm coverage before you need it.

New residents

Start with the county: utilities, permits, and most services run from county offices, and the city handles what it keeps local. Check water and sewer providers at the address, register with the county tax office, and let the school boundary decide the final answer on any address you are close on.
