Georgia's oldest pottery shop, in a grist mill above the Soque River on Scenic Highway 197.

Mark of the Potter is the oldest pottery shop in Georgia, in continuous operation since 1969 in the old Grandpa Watt's Grist Mill above the Soque River on Scenic Highway 197. The studio and gallery show the work of resident and guest potters, and the mill setting, with the river below, makes it the signature stop of the Highway 197 pottery loop.
The studio is open daily, roughly 10 AM to 6 PM, and the drive up 197 is half the experience: a winding mountain road through the Batesville countryside. It is the first stop on the classic Highway 197 run that also takes in Hickory Flat Pottery and Batesville General.
